Baccarat is the archetypal European casino game, forever associated with the
stylish casinos of Monaco, and it has its origin in southern Europe. For this
reason it tends to attract the more sophisticated gambler, and especially the
high rollers. Here is more information on how to play baccarat.
Baccarat is a card game that requires very little skill. Players simply place
their bets and await the outcome. Players play against the bank, and take turns
being the bank, although a player may decline his turn to be the bank. This does
not affect the game, or his chances of winning, should he decide to pass.
The betting is also simply, and involves betting with or against the bank.
Both types of betting pay even money odds, making it much simpler than many
other betting games, like Craps, for example, with its notoriously varied
pay-off tables. Baccarat is typically played with eight decks of cards per shoe,
with the shoe being refilled after all eight decks have been used up. Cards are
dealt to one player and to the bank. All the other players simply bet, and the
player does not take any active part in the game; he simply acts as the card
receiver. There is a strict schedule of rules determining whether either of the
hands may draw further cards after the initial two. For example, if the two
cards add up to 6 or 7, no further cards may be dealt to that hand.
Cards are valued according to their face values, with the exception of the
face cards, which count as zero. Cards are added together to arrive at the final
count, which must be below ten. So, for example, a 7 and a 9 are dealt, they add
up to 16. Ten is then subtracted to give a final count of 6.
The winner between the player and the bank is the hand that is the highest,
with 9 being an unbeatable score. Players bet on whether the bank or the player
will end up closest to a score of 9.
