Video poker is playing poker on a slots-like machine. There are many
variations of video poker, but they all amount to the same thing, based on the
5-card draw poker variation. Here is a basic overview of how to play video
poker.
You are dealt a 5-card hand of poker and choose any of the 5 cards to hold. A
number of other 5-card hands are then dealt on the screen – the number depends
on the version of video poker you are playing. These hands always contain the
cards you chose to hold, and the remaining cards are dealt at random to make up
a variety of 5-card hands containing your chosen cards plus the random hands.
You are then paid out for each of the hands dealt on the screen (except for your
original hand). The payouts depend on the variation of video poker that you are
laying, and the payout tables covering the various types of normal poker hands
that are possible. The higher your hand, the higher the payout thus if one
of the hands you have made is a full house, you will be paid out more than for
another hand you might have made containing two pair.
Let's take the example of 50-Hand Jacks or Better Video Poker, which is a
common form of video poker. The game begins with you choosing a bet size and
making a bet. You are then dealt your 5 cards. You choose which cards to hold,
bearing in mind that the lowest hand you can win with is a pair, but the pair
must be at least a pair of jacks, as this is the version of video poker that you
are playing. Let's say you are dealt an Ace of Hearts, a Jack of Hearts, a Queen
of Hearts, a 2 of Diamonds, and a 4 of Clubs. You would probably choose to hold
on to the three face cards and ignore the other two, as all the face cards, if
paired will pay out, and being all hearts, you have a chance at a flush as well.
After indicating which the cards you wish to hold, 50 hands containing the
cards you have held plus two more random cards each are dealt. You thus have 50
hands in which to make any combinations possible, and are paid out for each hand
where you have made a pair of jacks or higher..
