April 10 - The Greek global facing lottery services provider, Intralot, is making last minute attempts to have its license to operate the lottery in the Australian state of Victoria remain in place, after the government threatened to cancel it. Even if they do you can still enjoy online gambling opportunities on worldwide lottery games, so don't lose any sleep over Intralot's plight.
Intralot was recently warned that its first year operation results were so bad that the government would even consider cancelling the ten year lottery contract if things do not improve by June.
This week, the head of Intralot, Constantinos Antanopoulos, flew to Melbourne to meet with government officials to discuss the best course of action.
While Intralot predicted that first year sales could reach $293 million, estimates put this number to a whopping $226 million LESS. Intralot agents were not faring well in Victoria, to say the least. More than a third of them reported a loss in the last quarter of 2008, while nearly 200 of them took in a dismal $22 each per week!
Intralot's advertising and marketing campaign has been highly criticized. The government is worried that the company spent only $3 million in promoting the lottery brand - a quarter of the amount spent by Intralot's rival, Tatts, which, it should be noted, is doing much better in the market.
One of the new ideas proposed by Intralot is to use the face of Australian football star, Sam Kekovich to promote the lottery. Kevokich is not dismissing the opportunity to do to the Intralot lottery what he did for Australian lamb and turn it into a household concept. "I know some of the players involved, and it was mooted at some stage that perhaps they were looking to give it a more human touch, but there's no firm offer," said Kekovich.
But industry experts were skeptical about Intralot's last minute attempts to change its advertising strategy at such a late stage in the game. "It's desperation time. They're starting all over," said one analyst. "But if they think Sam Kekovich is the answer, they're kidding themselves."
Intralot, however, continues in its efforts to rebrand and promote the lottery before the June review deadline.
