J&B Met Betting Guide and Latest Odds - 01-28-10

January 28 - The South African summer horse racing season is in full swing and the highlight is the J&B Met, a handicap worth R2,5 million in stakes. The race will be run at Kenilworth in the Western Cape this Saturday and we have the latest J&B Met betting, plus our own guide to the best odds in the race.

In recent years this race has been the personal playground of the wonder-horse Pocket Power who will attempt to win his fourth straight Met. This feat has never been achieved before, and is unlikely to occur again in the future, so an enormous crowd is expected to be on hand to witness it.

Pocket Power is the betting favourite in the latest Ante-post market priced up at prohibitive odds of 18/10. His preparation has been superb and he won the Queens Plate last time out as his tune-up for this race. He carries a gentle weight of 58kgs and has to have a huge chance.

The biggest challenge is expected to come from the Gauteng trainer Charles Laird, who is the current champion trainer in the country. He has sent Dan De Lago and Oracy (as well as Smart Banker, another quality horse) down to wrest the title from the "people's horse". Dan De Lago is the stable elect and is 9/2 in the betting. Oracy is 11/2 and there is little to choose between them on form, although Laird is certain that Dan De Lago is the better one on the day.

Other runners in with a chance are Big City Life, who won the July, but looks overmatched at the weights, Red Rake, Fabiani, Kapil and Mother Russia. The latter is a filly with excellent form but a terrible draw to overcome.

The best each-way value could well be Fabiani. He is a gutsy little horse who has a chance at the weights, and could well finish in the money. At 20/1 you could quadruple your money if he finishes in the top 3 so take him to come a place at least.
