Last Season
The Jacksonville Jaguars didn't have a great NFL season in 2008,
finishing the year with a lack-luster 5-11 to secure 4th place in the
AFC South. The team had problems with its offense and defense, as it
struggled to make any decent ground offensively, averaging only 310
yards per game. And there was no real running game to speak of. But that
said, quarterback David Garrard had a great season, posting 3,620 yards
and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, the team was average at best and in need
of some work. Off Season
During the off-season, the Jacksonville Jaguars focused
on strengthening their offense by drawing heavily from the 2009 NFL
Draft. The team secured two top-draw linemen. The first, hugely powerful
and talented Eugene Monroe of Virginia, who is good enough to make it on
to the field in week 1, and the second, Eben Britton from Arizona, whose
talent on the field speaks for itself. With these two solid players
ready to bolster the Jaguars' offense, the team could be on the road to
redemption. They will be assisted by newly hired veteran wide receiver, Torry
Holt, who should work well with Garrard.
2009 Preview
Despite undergoing a complete overhaul and securing some top new
talent in the off-season, the Jacksonville Jaguars still have a long way
to go before they become a real threat. As is usually the case, the new
linemen will need some time - maybe even years - before they start
playing consistently and cohesively. The Jaguars also lack a standout
wide receiver, although Holt may prove to have a great season or two
left in him yet. In terms their defense, the Jaguars have a
long road ahead to become as competitive and reliable as they need to
be. That said, the Jaguars should play much better this season than last
season.
2009 Prediction
This season the Jacksonville Jaguars will have to keep their wits
about them given their tough schedule. Realistically, if the Jaguars can
triumph over the teams they are expected to beat, many fans will
consider their season a success. However, if the team surprises everyone
by pulling out all the stops and establishing itself early on in the
season, it could steam ahead all the way to the playoffs. Our Pick They aren't going to the playoffs, but they should do better than last season's paltry 5 wins. However, we still think they're the worst team in this division, and need a lot of improvement to feature in betting plans.
