2007 world series of poker

Jerry Yang Wins The 2007 World Series Of Poker - 07-19-07

July 19 - The final table of the 2007 World Series Of Poker lacked star power, as usual, with every top pro falling along the way - but it did have a truly global feel for the first time. Two years ago an Australian chiropractor, Joe Hachem, won the main event and this year the final table included players from Russia, South Africa, England, the USA, and Canada.

If you included countries of birth then the list became even more international. The eventual winner, Jerry Yang, was born in Laos and is Hmong. The runner-up, Tuan Lam is also a refugee hailing from Vietnam, a la Scotty Nguyen, who was the final big name eliminated in 11th place.

South Africa's hope, the retired Raymond Rahme, came close to lifting the title and played solid poker but eventually had to settle for third when his pocket Kings were cracked by Yang's Ax.

The Russian poker pro, Alex Kravchenko enjoyed an incredible World Series Of Poker, cashing six times, winning his first bracelet, and of course finishing 4th in the Main Event and netting another $1.8 million.

Kravchenko is one name from this motely group of players that we are likely to hear more about, but for the rest this might well be their 15 minutes of ESPN fame.

Jerry Yang won $8.25 million and should prove to be a better ambassador for the game of poker than last year's champ, the fundamentally untrustworthy Jamie Gold. Whether his unique style of aggressive play will result in future big tournament wins remains to be seen, but from what we've seen he's more Moneymaker than Raymer or Hachem.
