Last Season
The Kansas City Chiefs did not have a great 2008 NFL season and that
is putting it mildly after the team ended the season on a poor 2-14.
They would have been at the bottom of the league, had it not been for
the winless Detroit Lions. For the Chiefs it was a bad year for its
offense, who only averaged 208 yards a game, and an even worse year for
it defense, which allowed an average of 234 yards per game. Surprisingly
perhaps, despite these statistics the Chiefs did have their share of
chances to win and they lost 9 out of their 14 games by 10 points or
less.
Off Season
Going into the off-season, Kansas City Chiefs had more work to do on
their defense. With this in mind, the Chiefs headed into the 2009 NFL
Draft with some serious talent in mind. So it was surprising when the
team ignored the draft's number 1 defensive player, linebacker Aaron
Curry, and opted instead for big LSU defensive end, Tyson Jackson. The
Chiefs also went with another big player in the form of powerful Purdue
defensive tackle, Alex Magee. The fate of Kansas City's defense largely
rests with Jackson and Magee. The Chiefs also signed former New England
Patriots quarterback, Matt Cassel, to help bolster its offense.
2009 Preview
This season, the Kansas City Chiefs will have to knuckle down and do
some serious work if they want to avoid a repeat of last season. While
many fans are expecting the man behind center to be Cassel, the right
man for the job may well be existing quarterback, Tyler Thigpen. And
after racking up a 1,000 yard season last season, great things are
expected from wide receiver, WR Dwayne Bowe. That said, even with Bowe
at the top of his game, Kansas City will have to hone and polish its
offense. But the Chiefs' biggest concern has to be their defense, which
despite its talented new players, may need even more work.
2009 Prediction
Despite all the new players at the Kansas City Chiefs, there is a
growing fear that this season's Chiefs may too closely resemble last
season's team. While they'll undoubtedly be able to give their rivals a
run for their money, the question is whether they'll have the necessary
manpower to convert narrow losses to narrow victories. On the upside
though, the Chiefs were pretty close to rock bottom last year, so any
improvement will no doubt be welcomed by their fans.
**Our Pick It might be worth backing this team in their first few games. You'll certainly get good value + points in most cases. They should do a lot better than 2-14 but can hardly be expected to challenge for a playoff spot.
