April 29 - The 2010 Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be a fascinating contest with a wide-open look to it that is a handicapper's nightmare and a bookie's delight. Our prediction is that there will be a big upset this year. Why? Because there is so much early speed in this year's race and the favorites have drawn poorly in terms of how they need the race to set up.
Kentucky Derby betting activity increased sharply yesterday after the draws for the big race were announced. Morning line favorite, Lookin At Lucky continued to show that he is the most ironically named horse in recent memory when he unluckily drew stall gate 1. This is a horse who needs to run free as he always seems to encounter traffic problems. From poll position he has almost zero shot of running the kind of trip he needs, and at 3/1 his odds look misguided. There is better value elsewhere.
Other favored runners include Sidney's Candy who also got a terrible draw (widest of all at 20), Ice Box who will hop out of stall gate 2, and Awesome Act who is not well drawn at 16.
If you're looking for longshot betting value our pick to win it all is Mission Impazible, currently trading at generous odds of 20/1. He is the Louisiana Derby winner, and while there hasn't been a lot of buzz about him he seems to have come on really well, is the right type of horse to win this race, and has a decent draw as well.
