March 2 - The L.A. Poker Classic is one of the major World Poker Tour events and always attracts a star-studded field of poker legends. Thus it comes as no small surprise to learn that an amatuer, Eric Hershler, playing in his first live poker tournament has won the event.
Hershler is a South African currently living in Los Angeles where his day job is the law. The final table included World Series Of Poker Main Event runner-up Paul Wasicka as well as JC Tran (over $3 million in career tournament earnings), but neither were up to the task of beating Eric Hershler.
The previous winners of the LA Poker Classic since it became a WPT event include Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari, and Gus Hansen - an auspicious list by anyone's reckoning.
The heads-up battle was between Tran and Hershler, and even though the amateur enjoyed a slight lead in terms of chip stacks most railbirds were betting that the pro would end up on top. How wrong they were as the matter was settled on the very first hand between them!
Hershler limped. Tran raised it up and Hershler called. The flop came A-J-6. Tran bet out over a million in chips and Hershler pushed all-in. Tran called instantly with the A-7 but ran into Hershler's J-6. The turn and the river provided no help and it was over in an instant.
The win was worth $2,429,970 and JC Tran picked up $1,177,010 for his efforts.
