May 19 - Love him (if you're from the mighty state of Alabama, or if you yearn for a puffy version of George Clooney to cover Bob Seger tunes), hate him (the principled thing to do), or simply feel a vague sense of indifference towards him - Taylor Hicks is going to win American Idol in 2006 - at least he is according to the latest American Idol odds.
If you want to bet on American Idol you have to go to Bodog.com, one major sportsbook that is offering odds on whether Taylor Hicks or Katharine McPhee will become this year's Idol.
While watching Taylor Hicks boogie down in his cracker-soul manner to 'Dancing In The Dark', or listening to Katharine McPhee sing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' in all sincerity, without even the buffer of a decent Julie Garland on meds impersonation, one may seek comfort in the bible: "Destroy all Idols" (Paraphrasing there, but the message from the Big Guy on this topic is pretty clear).
Hicks seems destined to join those other graven images from prior seasons who have gone on to record mind-numbing tunes that are best described as corporate crowd pleasers. If McPhee comes second she can record girlish duets with another narrow loser, Clay Aiken. The similarities between the two are haunting: their mutual love of show tunes and strappy gowns; overwraught voices; a complete absence of cool.
Taylor Hicks is -230 in the betting or roughly 2/5 to win American Idol. If you want to bet on the sultry McPhee you can get odds of 16/10 or +160.
Bodog.com offers lots of interesting betting markets for the major reality TV shows. You can bet on who will win the latest version of The Apprentice, see Survivor betting, and you can also bet on which summer movies will do the best and the worst at the box office.
Best moment in American Idol for this year: Listening to the redneck, Red-state govenah from Alabammy reading out a message to Taylor from Randy Jackson, complete with cringe-worthy references to Randy's Dawg pound, and how taylor is now his dawg. An audience of smiling happy white folk looked on as the governor relayed Randy's message. Black folk could be seen in the distance workin' the land and whistlin' (only kidding, there were 0 black people on screen anywhere).
