Latest World Cup Odds To Win It All! - 06-28-06

June 28 - Only eight teams still have a chance to win the 2006 World Cup, and sportsbooks have now posted their latest odds for the overall winner of the tournament. Brazil are still the betting favorites, but then there are a few surprises.

Brazil are 5/2, holding relatively firm from the outset of the competition. That's to be expected. They haven't shown deadly form but they haven't had to either. This is a team that has done everything asked of them, so it's hard to take away the top spot from them.

Germany are 9/2 due to a flood of betting support. This is surprising. Germany have home-field advantage but they had a very weak group to contend with and beat a disappointing Sweden in the second round, the same Swedish team that couldn't beat Trinidad & Tobago (reduced to 10 men no less).

Germany are likely to be beaten in the quarter-finals by the other second-favorite in the betting: Argentina, who are also 9/2. This has been the most impressive team in the tournament so far, and we at the Insider confidently expect them to rout the krauts on Friday!

Italy are 11/2 and England are 6/1, and it comes as no surprise to see England on the drift. They have shown little on the pitch and will struggle to beat Portugal (currently a generous 14/1 in the betting). Watch out for Portugal, who will be back to full strength if they beat England.

France are 10/1 following a brilliant win over Spain. France will give Brazil a true test, but surely Portugal are much better value if you look at the draw. It's hard to bet France knowing they must beat Brazil in their next game, but don't count them out.

Ukraine are 50/1 and should count themselves lucky to be in the last eight. We can think of at least five teams that are superior to them that are not there: Spain, Ghana, Mexico, Netherlands, and even the Ivory Coast would have whipped this bunch.
