June 26 - There was very nearly a huge betting upset at the World Cup soccer in Germany today as minnows Australia were a heartbeat away from holding giants Italy to a 0-0 draw. But poor officiating came to the rescue yet again: Italy got an undeserved penalty kick and won 1-0.
The second game of the day did produce a minor upset in terms of the odds that the bookies were offering on the game, as Ukraine held Switzerland to a 0-0 draw and then prevailed in a woeful penalty shoot-out. This was a poor game from a neutral point of view, but it confirmed the low-scoring trend for games in the last 16.
The UNDER for total goals in regulation has now cashed in for 6 straight games. Tomorrow sees Spain vs France, where the Under 2.5 goals has to be favored again as both these teams know each other very well and might not allow much space.
Australia exit this tournament with their heads held high as they were certainly no pushovers. The Italians advance, but they know they're lucky to do so after they were reduced to 10 men and didn't look good enough to win for long stretches of this one.
