June 23 - Friday's 2006 World Cup soccer results were a dream come true for sports gamblers who enjoy betting on favorites at conservative odds. All four games were won by teams at the shortest odds, and there were few surprises in Germany today.
Switzerland defeated a plucky South Korean team by a final score of 2-0. The only World Cup betting surprise here was that with the win the Swiss won their group, at the expense of France who finished in the runner-up spot.
France finally managed to win a game at the World Cup when they beat Togo 2-0. FIFA, please pay the Togo players their $20,000 bonuses and ship them back to their blighted country as soon as possible - they were utterly useless.
Putting soccer betting aside for a second - crazy thought - this spells bad news for France who must now face a rampant Spain. Switzerland get the relatively cushy draw in the second round as they play the erratic Ukraine.
In an earlier game Ukraine sealed second place in their group by beating Tunisia 1-0 thanks to a penalty, or as the US commentators insist on calling it, "a PK". Soccer is a sport mainly enjoyed by the very young in America, and commentators definitely factor this into consideration by aiming their analysis at a 5-year old level.
Spain trotted out their B team and they turned in a typically lazy and careless performance in beating an outclassed Saudi Arabia 1-0. Spain tried in the first half, should have scored 4 and settled for 1, and then took a 45-minute siesta in the second half. They continue to dazzle in World Cup group play, and it shouldn't be long before they're sent packing in the knock-out phases, as per usual.
