Latest WSOP News - Negreanu and Hachem Eliminated - 08-06-06

August 6 - The 2006 World Series Of Poker needs to be won by a big-name poker pro (and we'll explain why a little later) but news from the WSOP is that the two leading candidates that were still in the Main Event, Daniel Negreanu and Joe Hachem, have both been eliminated.

Negreanu, known as "Kid Poker", played a brand of poker that was gifted bordering on genius, Amadeus with two hole cards, but sheer numbers of opposition ultimately overwhelmed exuberant innovation and he departed in 229th spot.

Negreanu earned a little over $42,000 for his efforts and received an ovation of note when he left the Amazon room. It was the second round of generous applause in a short period of time as the defending 2005 WSOP champion, Joe Hachem, also received his dues when he was eliminated in 238th place, earning the same amount of money.

Hachem played with a point to prove, that he was no once-off winner, and like Raymer before him he has dispelled that notion for good. His AA was eventually cracked by JJ (our poker editor sympathizes as his WSOP was cut short by AA vs KK, although that was some 8000 eliminations prior to Hachem's).

At the moment the usual bunch of anonymous names head the leaderboard. We'll learn later that they are excellent players, and that their performance is unsurprising to them, but the game needs a recognized champion to win.

It would prove to the casual observer that poker is primarily a game of skill, and that making it to the final table is no random event. The logic would be flawed, but that's how the general public think for better or worse.

Currently, the only big-name pros left are Allen Cunningham, Annie Duke, and Humberto Brenes. They're not the A-List of poker pros by any means, but a victory by any one of them would be good for poker in the long run.

As of 1 PM (Las Vegas time) on Sunday there are only 115 players left with a shot at the enormous first prize of $12 million. The chip leader is Jamie Gold with 3,900,000 and he is more than 1 million chips ahead of the man in second, Michael Binger
