July 12 - Talented Welsh midfielder, Joe Ledley, raised more than a few eyebrows recently, when he chose to sign a 4-year contract with top Scottish side Celtic, instead of signing with prestigious English Premier League club, Stoke City.
Despite the fact that Celtic is considered one of the top football clubs in Britain, the reality is that given the choice, the vast majority of footballers would choose to play in the English Premier League rather than the Scottish Premier League.
Which is why Ledley's decision has been met with some derision. In fact, more than he expected and from an unexpected source - from the self same fans that used to support him week in and week out when he played for Cardiff City.
His move to a Scottish club instead of an English club has been seen by his once loyal Welsh fans as a 'slap in the face'. There is a perception in Wales that a move to Scotland instead of England is more of a sideways than a forward step.
That and the fact that Ledley's move to the Scottish Premier League instead of the English Premier League will cost Cardiff City around £3m in compensation. If he had signed with Stoke City, the club would have received the compensation.
But for Ledley, the reaction from Welsh fans has soured his time with the Bluebirds. The media has reported that although he expected some criticism for his decision to leave his hometown and club, he didn't expect the large backlash he received.
A friend of Ledley's was quoted as saying, 'He feels he has given Cardiff great service over the last six seasons and thought he would have got a bit more respect ... Instead he's hurt and stunned by some of the false accusations and general abuse.'
But at least the 23-year-old Welsh national can find some solace in the £28,000-a-week he will reportedly earn with Celtics. Stoke City, meanwhile, have announced that winger Matthew Etherington has signed a four-year contract extension.
