February 14 - Every Manchester United and Manchester City derby in the English Premier League draws capacity crowds and television audiences, and Saturday's showdown, which saw the former triumph 2-1, was no exception.
Over 75,300 fans lucky enough to have tickets for the big game crowded into Old Trafford on Saturday to watch home team Man United take on local rivals Man City, in what was undoubtedly an exhilarating matchup from start to finish.
From the outset it soon became clear that neither team were willing to give an inch, United being the current English Premier League leaders and City lying third behind Arsenal, in the race to see which team will top the 2010/11 season.
As such, for most of the first half neither side could break through the others defenses, until in the 40th minute, using both his feet to weave his way closer to City's goal, United's Portuguese winger Nani blasted one past City's goalkeeper.
Old Trafford's predominantly Manchester United supporters shook the stadium to its core as they leaped up and yelled with joy as Nani put their club 1-0 ahead, five minutes before both sides marched off the pitch at the half-time whistle.
The second half started off pretty much the same as the first half, with both clubs defending well, until in the 64th minute, Manchester City defender David Silva scored an equalizer to put the visitors on an equal footing with the home side.
So tied at 1-1 and everything to play for, both sides turned up the heat. And the only question on the minds of football fans everywhere was which of the Manchester titans would score the tiebreaker? They found out in the 77th minute.
In a tremendous display of footballing skill and prowess, Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney saw Nani's superb pass, and raised it with an eye-popping overhead kick that rocketed the ball into the far corner of Man City's net.
If United fans erupted at Nani's goal, they did so doubly at Rooney's goal, a welcome reminder of why the 25-year-old is paid a whopping £250,000 a week, even though up until Saturday he had only scored a mere five goals this season.
And as Rooney's exemplary goal went unanswered, Manchester United saw off Manchester City 2-1 at the final whistle, pushing the home team even further ahead in the English Premier League standings on 57 points to City's 49 points.
