February 2 - As the battle to win the 2009/10 English Premier League
hots up, so the few teams still in with a shot have to step it up, although not
all are. Take Arsenal. It has been lingering near the top spot, but its recent
3-1 loss to Manchester United may have put paid any chances it had to clinch the
title.

When the Gunners faced the Gunners the Gunners at Emirates Stadium in
London on Sunday, most Arsenal fans were confident the home team could take on
the visitors and beat them. But they were wrong, though not for lack of trying.
The home team missed many attempts at the Manchester United's goal.
But bad luck aside for Arsenal, in all fairness their opponents proved more than
worthy to chalk up the scoreline they did, as Manchester United displayed some
magnificent counter-attacking football and although they had less possession of
the ball than Arsenal, their attempts at goal proved to be more accurate.
Of course it has to be said that throughout the match Arsenal manager, Arsene
Wenger, did not appear to be a happy camper. There he sat rigid, dead still,
eyes smouldering, arms folded and of course his frown lines mapping out his face
just as the lunar lander mapped out the craterous moon decades ago.
The short and tall of it is that Arsenal made too many errors while Manchester
capitalized on its few opportunities. The loss was only Arsenal's fourth at
Emirates Stadium. Ironically, two losses each were to Chelsea and Manchester
United, the two teams leading the League by 54 and 53 points respectively.
In other games, Sunderland drew 0-0 with Stoke City leaving both teams where
they were on the English Premier League standings, while Manchester City beat
Portsmouth 2-0. The loss has increased the likelihood that Portsmouth will be
relegated to the First Division at the end of the season with just 15 points.
Manchester City fans can celebrate the fact that they are currently lying sixth
in the Premier League standings with 41 points, tied with Liverpool. Tonight,
English football fans can look forward to watching Chelsea take on Hull City at
7:45pm GMT.
