February 7 - For many weeks, current English Premier League leaders Manchester United have done no wrong, racking up wins with an enviable ease and consistency, that is until they were beaten 2-1 on Saturday by lowly Wolverhampton.
Manchester United fans who made the trek to Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton and those who saw the game live on TV, could only watch in utter disbelief as their side failed to shine against a club that is currently at risk of certain relegation.
Even though Manchester United opened the scoring three minutes into the first half thanks to talented Portuguese winger Nani, who stepped inside and struck one past Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, something was off with the Red Devils.
It soon became clear that the usually brilliant and plotting Manchester United of previous weeks was nowhere to be seen as they and their rivals routinely exploited gaping holes in each others defensive games, and yet failed to notch up the goals.
However, the Wolves equalised in the 10th minute courtesy of a sterling header from Wolves' left back George Elokobi, who capitalised on a loose corner ball and then beat Man U's Nemanja Vidic by nodding the ball into the back of Man U's net.
Stunned at being tied 1-1, Manchester United attempted to tighten up their game, but what followed instead was more sloppy defending and attacking, almost as if the Wolves had bewitched the Red Devils to bring them down to their lackluster level.
As proof of this, and to the chagrin of Man U's fans and machine gum-toting manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the Wolves scored again in the 39th minute off a cross from Wolves' midfielder Nenad Milijaš, which Elokobi was attributed as knocking in.
Surprisingly perhaps, despite many changes on the part of Manchester United, the mighty Red Devils failed to equalise in the second half and the frustration was evident in the Man United camp, right up until the final whistle which saw them lose 2-1.
