January 12 - On the weekend only two games were played in the English
Premier League, but the one most discussed around water dispensers, coffee
machines and in smoking areas across the UK today, is no doubt the game between
Manchester United and Birmingham.

Played on Saturday at St Andrews Stadium in Birmingham, there is no doubt that
Manchester United fans and even some Birmingham fans (although you'll be
hard-pressed to find any that would admit it) expected the Red Devils to
dispatch the Blues. They were very wrong.
There is a reason that Birmingham has remained unbeaten in 13 English Premier
League and FA Cup matches. And that reason was encountered by Manchester United
on the field on Saturday - namely 'confidence'. Although less skilful than Man
U, Birmingham are a confident team.
Undaunted by the current league standings of Manchester United, never mind the
team's mammoth reputation, host of super-expensive players and fierce manager,
Sir Alex Ferguson, Birmingham played for their fans, showing tremendous heart
and dedication, and a powerful will to win.
And we know Ferguson saw this for himself by the way he chewed on his gum. The
more stressed Fergie gets, the faster he chews on his infamous Manchester
United-flavoured gum. And so during the game his jaw moved up and down faster
than a nitrous oxide-fuelled jackhammer.
In the first half Ferguson's jaws earned no respite as the home team kept his
ever-attacking team at bay. He even switched his chewing up a notch or two when
just before the half time whistle, Birmingham's Cameron Jerome sent one
rocketing into the back of United's net to make it 1-0.
By the second half, Ferguson's rumoured titanium implants were reportedly
glowing white hot as his chewing grew more and more frenzied. That was, however,
until the 63rd minute of the game when Birmingham City's Scott Dann scored an
unfortunate own-goal, tying the score at 1-1.
From then until the final whistle the score stayed the same, and Ferguson's
smouldering teeth earned some respite. While United fans were disappointed that
their team failed to break through Birmingham's defence, Birmingham fans were
disappointed that their midfielders were outclassed.
Here are the English Premier League Football results from Saturday, January 9:
Arsenal 2-2 Everton
Birmingham 1-1 Man Utd
