September 12 - The St Leger Stakes, contested over 3000m, is an anomaly in flat racing these days but the final Classic race of the English flat horse racing season is still eagerly anticipated by punters and draws a huge crowd to Doncaster Race course. This year the race lived up to all the hype as the two Godolphin stable companions, Kite Wood and Mastery, fought out a neck and neck battle to the finish line.

In the end it was the betting outsider, Mastery, not even favoured by his own connections, who proved the better stayer on the day, just outlasting the race favourite Kite Wood. The latter, ridden by the champion jockey Frankie Detorri, couldn't find the extra gear to dispatch his stable companion. Both horses are trained by Saeed Bin Suroor for Sheik Mohammed.
Kite Wood was installed as the top betting choice in the 2009 St Leger at odds of 9-4 by a crowd of nearly 30,000 who packed in to see this endurance test, which most of the fancied runners failed in the grueling final two furlongs.
While well-backed horses like Father Time, who was bidding to give Henry Cecil yet another Classic win, and Monitor Closely, who held Mastery on form over a mile and half, failed to see out the trip the two Godolphin runners joined issue and raced as one to the finish. But it was Ted Durcan who won on the second-stringer at the juicy odds of 14-1.
Godolphin also won the opening race on the St Leger card as Poet's Voice won the Champagne Stakes, reinforcing their superiority with juveniles this season. Could the great Godolphin machine be making a comeback? Amazingly this was their first Classic triumph in five years, but they certainly have the stock to win more in 2010.
