July 18 - We're seeing the biggest fields in the history of the World Series Of Poker, but that hasn't stopped a math theorist named Bill Chen from collecting two WSOP bracelets in the space of a week.On July 9 Chen burst onto the 2006 WSOP scene by winning the $3,000 buy-in Limit Hold'em championship. He won his first bracelet as well as $343,618. Seven days later the game theory expert was at it again, beating 739 players in the $2,500 Short-Handed World Poker Championship. This time he won $442,511 and announced to the poker world that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Bill Chen started play at the final table as one of the short-stacks. He was fifth in chips with only $175,000, and only Nath Pizzolatto with $102,000 started with less. Funnily enough, it was Pizzolatto who eventually finished runner-up as the chip leaders failed to maintain momentum.
Mike Guttmann, who began the day as the chip leader finished third. The Aussie is having a phenomenal world series as he earlier finished second in the Pot-Limit Omaha WSOP Event.
But the day belonged to Chen, who has a PhD in Mathematics and is the new professor on the block. Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, and Howard Lederer, regarded by most as the "brainiest" poker players, have both been very quiet in these events and maybe they need to watch out!
Only Phil Ivey and Ted Forrest have ever won 3 WSOP events in the same year. Can Bill Chen join their illustrious company? He has plenty of time left, and certainly has the poker talent as well...
