| August 1 - The great thing about online sports betting is that punters and sports fans alike can bet on all manner of sporting events and happenings, including the employment situations of athletes. Take NFL 'dog lover' Michael Vick, whose employment situation is attracting lots of betting action at Bodog.com.
The controversial quarterback was suspended by the NFL indefinitely without pay on August, 2007 after pleading guilty to knowingly and willingly taking part in the illegal and cruel sport of dog fighting. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell condemned the player's actions as 'not only illegal, but cruel and reprehensible.'
And Vick's woes did not end there as Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, the team that had recently signed the quarterback, addressed a news conference saying that he would be seeking to recover part of Vick's signing bonus. Vick was reportedly asked to hand back $20 million of his $37 million bonus.
Following arbitration in October 2007, Vick was ordered to repay the Atlanta Falcons $19.97 million. At the end of his criminal trial, the player was found guilty of a felony conspiracy in interstate commerce/aid of unlawful animal fighting venture, and sentenced to 23 months in prison and 3 years probation thereafter.
He was released on July 20 this year after completing his sentence, which is how he landed himself on Bodog's radar. Now that Vick has so-called paid his debt to society (and ensured that he'll never again receive pets as gifts), the 29-year-old is hoping that some NFL team will approach him and sign him up to play.
Bodog, one of the world's leading online sportsbooks, has issued betting odds on which team is likely to give Vick a contract. Leading the way at 4/1 are the New England Patriots and the Orlando Tuskers. The Baltimore Ravens are next at 5/1, followed by the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins at 6/1.
The San Francisco 49ers are sitting at 7/1 while the Buffalo Bills are sitting at 10/1. Bear in mind that the Bills have already signed up wide receiver Terrell Owens, who has not been without controversy in his own right.
