Last Season
The Minnesota Vikings had a good 2008 NFL season, though perhaps not
as great as their fans would have liked, but good enough to finish the
season on 10-6 and win the NFC North. The Vikings' success had a lot to
do with talented young running back, Adrian Peterson, who came top in
the NFL with 1,760 rushing yards. Despite the team's slow start, they
saw out the season by winning 5 of their last 6 games, including against
tough teams like New York and Arizona. Sadly, however, the Vikings went
down to the Philadelphia Eagles in the opening round of the playoffs.
Off Season
Considering their 2008 season, the
Minnesota Vikings did not scrabble during the off-season as much as
other NFL teams. They did, however, tempt quarterback, Sage Rosenfels,
away from the Houston Texans to challenge current quarterback, Tarvaris
Jackson. The team also turned to the 2009 NFL Draft to pick up some new
talent. They selected wide receiver, Percy Harvin, who may have his
critics, but who shined through in Florida and could do the same for the
Vikings. The team also selected 330 pound offensive tackle, Phillip Loadholt,
swift cornerback, Asher Allen, and linebacker, Jasper Brinkley, who is
recovered from a knee injury.
2009 Preview
Judging by the way the Minnesota Vikings played last season, there is
still a little room for improvement, but at least the team does not have
to reinvent itself entirely, unlike many other teams in the NFL who had
nightmare seasons last year. This season the Vikings need to focus on
solving the issues that have plagued center for a while now, as well as
work on their passing attack. If the team can successfully tweak these
areas ahead of the new season, this could be one of the most exciting
teams to watch in the NFL this year. Especially considering that the
Vikings have such a solid running game and a defense that can stand up
to the best of them.
2009 Prediction
Despite speculation that superstar quarterback Brett Favre would
continue to play for the Vikings, he announced on July 28 that his
retirement was official. So without Favre on the team, the big question
is how the Vikings will kick off the 2009 NFL season. Probably pretty
well, considering their schedule is relatively soft early on in the
season. So if the Vikings can start off strong and keep the momentum
going for their harder games down the line, they should be in good
shape.
**Our Pick Favre used to destroy the Vikings when he played for the Packers and this year he'll get to destroy them again, only now in a Minnesota jersey. This team will go backwards if he plays for them, and look unlikely to repeat their 10-6 form from last season. Bet against them early and often.
