January 11 - Following an order from the Attorney General and State
Prosecutor two weeks ago, the Police Investigations and Intelligence Department
have begun to question several companies suspected of advertising online
gambling sites.
The Israeli business media has reported multiple instances of
these raids and a debate is raging in business circles of the legality of them. Several high profile companies have been questioned so far including MSN
Israel, Start (a company owned by Microsoft) and Internet Gold Ltd. Thus far
there has been no official comment made by any of these companies although some
are predicting a long running battle similar to that taking place in the USA.
As in the USA the legal status of gambling and advertising gambling sites is
unclear over several key issues. The principle reason for this is that many
gambling laws have not evolved to keep pace with the emergence of the internet
in the mid 1990's. Some commentators are alarmed by the swift and apparently
'strong-arm' tactics employed by the Israeli Police and believe that it will
become a national topic of debate within the coming months.
