Golden St. Warriors (8) +1000 vs. Dallas Mavericks (1) -1600
The odds suggest a quick and painful exit for the Warriors, and the Mavericks do come into the playoffs boasting the best record in the entire NBA. But the Warriors own the Mavericks, sweeping them in the regular season. They're also hot right now with a tremendous offense that saw them win 9 of their final 10 games to get to the playoffs on the last day of the season.
The Warriors have a lot of momentum, and this is the first time they are back in the playoffs in ages. The last time they were here their guard was Avery Johnson, now the Mavericks' coach! There is even more history because Don Nelson, coach of the Warriors, was the previous head coach of the Mavs and was partly responsible for building the current team.
What does all of this mean? Mavericks are still more talented and should prevail but this series could easily go the distance and look for the Warriors to win at least two games. There is very good value betting the Warriors + the points in the first three games of the series.
Los Angeles Lakers (7) +1100 vs. Phoenix Suns (2) -1800
Lakers are the least talented team in the Western conference playoffs bar none. Take away Kobe Bryant and they wouldn't be able to win a Final Four college game. The Suns will destroy them in a sweep. There might be some underdog value taking the Lakers to cover the spread for the games at Phoenix but only if you're getting 9 points or more.
Denver Nuggets (6) +600 vs. San Antonio Spurs (3) -800
The Spurs are dull but very formidable. The Nuggets are volatile but lightweights. You do the math. It would appear very unlikely that this series goes any longer than 5 games although the Nuggets will be happy to have a big match player like Iverson in the mix. The Nuggets can certainly compete but the Spurs are deadly at home and that bench is overwhelming.
Houston Rockets (5) -240 vs. Utah Jazz (4) +200
On paper this looks like the most closely matched contest. The Jazz had an exceptionally good season until the last few weeks when they fell to pieces. The Rockets are built for a deep run in the playoffs with their two matchwinners. The oddsmakers have this one spot on in our opinion - the Rockets advance to the second round, but it will not be easy and this is a series that could certainly stretch to the full seven games.
