Last Season
The New Orleans Saints was a team with a split personality last
season. On one hand they boasted the best offense in the NFL, with
superstar quarterback, Drew Brees, racking up over 5,000 yards during
the season. And overall the Saints' offense was the only one in the
league to average over 400 yards of total offense and over 300 yards of
passing offense. On the other hand the Saints had one of the worst
defenses in the NFL, which allowed 340 yards and over 24 points per
game. Despite this, however, New Orleans ended the season on 8-8.
Off Season
During the off-season the New Orleans Saints mainly concentrated on
improving their lack-luster defense by adding some new blood to the team
via the 2009 NFL Draft. The first player the Saints selected was ex-Ohio
State cornerback, Malcolm Jenkins, a player known for making big plays
and helping the rush defense. The next player the Saints snagged is
hefty ex-Wake Forest safety, Chip Vaughn, another big hitter. The Saints
also re-signed many of their star players from last season including
wide receiver, Lance Moore, offensive guard, Jahri Evans, and formidable
linebacker, Jonathan Vilma, who dazzled in 2008 by making over 130
tackles.
2009 Preview
Although the
New Orleans Saints struggled with their defense last season, anybody
who watched all of their games will agree that at least four of their
losses could have turned into victories if the ball had bounced their
way. Hopefully with their defensive woes behind them and their excellent
offense still intact, the Saints will start the new season with a
vengeance, and ensure that most balls bounce their way. There is little
doubt that New Orleans will be the team to beat in the NFC and if they
play consistently and cohesively they should make the playoffs and
beyond. The big question, however, is what the team's defense will bring
to the party this season.
2009 Prediction
The New Orleans Saints should see a soft start to the season, going up
against the likes of the Detroit Lions in week 1, the Buffalo Bills in
week 3 and the New York Jets in week 4. In week 2, however, the Saints
will have to keep their wits about them when they take on the
Philadelphia Eagles. Saints fans will no doubt be disappointed if at the
end of these games the team hasn't started 4-0 or at worst 3-1. This is
definitely one of the teams to watch this season.
**Our Pick This is a team that flatters to deceive, much like their failed "star player" Reggie who is all flash but basically a glorified punt returner and 3rd down back. They miss the playoffs again, despite fantastic bursts of offense.
