August 31- Happy Labor Day weekend everyone - not sure if this is a recognized standard salutation, but I`ll go with it. If you`re looking for an interesting way to spend your free Monday morning might I suggest signing up with the Cake Online Poker Network. I play through PlayersOnly Poker, but I`m sure there are other sites on this very cool network that is rapidly growing.
Why am I shilling for Cake you might well ask? The answer is that they are offering a new (at least to me) type of SNG (Sit N Go) Tournament that really favors full-time or experienced online poker players.
Here`s how these Sit And Go events on Cake work: The buy in is $100+$6 (they also offer $75 + $5 and $50 + $3.50, anything smaller is not going to be worthwhile for you although I`m sure they`re out there) and there are 10 spots in each tournament. The prize pool is thus $1000 and the TOP FIVE all win the same - namely $200.
So, you`re betting $106/$200 and as any pro gambler will tell you that is a beatable vig if you have any ability. In fact you only need to win 52% of the time to make a profit, which beats sports betting and certainly beats regular poker tournament rakes.
You have a 50% shot of cashing without any edge. Now imagine that you know what you`re doing in poker - it would not be difficult to cash 60% of the time when 5 out of 10 get in the money.
These type of tournaments require very different strategy in order to do well, because the name of the game is not to win every chip at the table. Gem theory cooperation becomes vital, and in some cases you have to fold extremely strong hole cards as optimal strategy, I`m talking big pocket pairs here and certainly speculative hands like AQ or AK.
You have to do this when the bubble approaches, in this case 6th spot out of 10. But even prior to the bubble it helps to be conservative and let the others race all-in.
I think this is the coolest new thing to happen to online poker in more than a year. It really affords good players the opportunity to generate a signifcant earning rate per hour. Now if there was only some way for me to increase the number of players on this network so that we could have games going round the clock...hmmm...
