Last Season
Hopes were high for the surprise 2007 NFL Champions, the New York
Giants, last season. With the memory of their dazzling Super Bowl XLII
victory still fresh, the Giants kicked off the 2008 NFL season with a
bang. They dominated for most of the season, driving up their record to
11-1. However, the wheels fell off as wide receiver, Plaxico Burress,
got caught up in some off-the field antics and the team's offense
started sliding. The season ended for the Giants when the Philadelphia
Eagles beat them in the first round of the playoffs 23-11.
Off Season
Smarting from their reversal of fortune last season, the New York
Giants went into the off-season ready to make some changes. As such, the
Giants used the 2009 NFL Draft to select top wide receiver, Hakeem
Nicks, who racked up 1,222 yards and 12 touchdowns with North Carolina,
as well as fellow wide receiver, Ramses Barden, a big guy with untapped
potential. Defensively, New York selected talented inside linebacker, Clint Sintim,
along with defensive tackle, William Beatty. Unfortunately the Giants
lost running back, Derrick Ward, to the Tampa Buccaneers, but re-signed
top running back, Brandon Jacobs, for another 4 years.
2009 Preview
The New York Giants have a pretty solid team going into the 2009 NFL
season. The team's defense is expected to be every bit as strong as it
was at the start of last season, if not stronger. But if there is one
area of concern, it lies with the Giants' offense. Unlike last season,
the dynamic duo of Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs will not support each
other in the back field, which could weaken the team's rushing attack.
Also, there is question about whether Hakeem Nicks will be able to bring
it in his freshman season, and Plaxico
Burress is still expected to be MIA. If the offense is lacking, it will
be up to the defense to keep the team on point.
2009 Prediction
Despite having arguably one of the best starting teams this season, it
is crucial that the New York Giants make a cracking start to the season
by dispatching the likes of strong early opponents like the Washington
Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys. With the strength of its offense in
question, the Giants need to dominate early on in the season and then
fight to prevent a repeat of last season.
**Our Pick This team is the class of the division and while the Eagles look tough to supplant the Giants should fancy their chances as a wild card for the postseason. You know what they're capable of from there.
