2010 Season
The New York Jets have every right to be frustrated after they
were knocked out in the AFC Championship Game last season - the
second time in so many years. The phrase 'so close, yet so far' is
still ringing in the ears of the Jets and their fans alike. Of
course, if the team's outspoken head coach Rex Ryan has anything
to say about it, the Jets are a shoe-in to win the Vince Lombardi
trophy this year.
2011 Off Season
In the off season, Ryan concentrated more on the Jets' (already
superb) defense than offense, using the 2011 NFL Draft to great
effect by signing DT Muhammad Wilkerson and DL Kendrick Ellis. And
although he failed to sign free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Ryan did
sign up former Jets CB, Donald Strickland. Offensively, the coach
retained the services of talented WR and free agent Santonio
Holmes, while also signing controversial WR Plaxico Burress, who
spent the last two years behind bars on gun charges, but has
bucket loads of raw talent.
2011 Preview
Looking at the New York Jets over the last couple of seasons, they
have pretty much fired on all cylinders. But it goes without
saying that they need to dig a littler deeper to progress beyond
the AFC Championship Game, for a coveted place in Super Bowl XLVI.
To help accomplish this, head coach Rex Ryan has been tweaking the
team's defense, which dipped slightly in quality last season from
the season before. The addition of Wilkerson, Ellis and Strickland
should give the team more depth here, while LB David Harris should
add his two bits. Offensively, Jets QB Mark Sanchez is expected to
have a 'humdinger' of a year, and could even go All-Pro. Plus, if
Burress can regain his form from a few seasons ago, he and and
Sanchez could become quite a force to be reckoned with.
2011 Prediction
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan seems like the kind of man
who would happily travel to a hostile country to free U.S.
prisoners, a guy with a 'never say die attitude' who knows what he
wants. And what Ryan wants is to win Super Bowl XLVI. If 'third
time lucky' means anything, this could be the year of the Jets,
and the ideal chance to return the Vince Lombardi trophy to the
Big Apple. Expect fireworks when the Jets face the Patriots in
Game 5.
**Our Pick
Obviously the big NFL betting question is whether Rex Ryan can
fire up the New York Jets enough to secure a spot in Super Bowl
XLVI? For our betting buck judging by the Jets' acquisitions and
changes in the off season, this is highly possible. And even
though the Jets will in all likelihood again finish second
to the Patriots in the AFC East division (possibly on 12-4), it's
which teams that make it through to the playoffs and beyond that
counts.
