Last Season
Thanks to talented quarterback Brett Favre, the New York Jets kicked
off last season with a bang to the relief of their fans. The memory of
the season before, when the Jets went down by a shocking 4-12
thanks to a poor offense, was still painful for many. Favre's single
year deal with New York was a masterstroke, as he and running back
Thomas Jones worked well together to put the team's offense back on
track. But just when it looked like the Jets were in with a shot to win
the AFC East, the team fell apart. The team's offense and defense stunk,
ensuring it missed the playoffs. As a result, head coach Eric Mangini
got the boot while Rex Ryan replaced him, ready for the 2009 season. Off Season
There is a confidence in the Jets new head coach Rex
Ryan, judging by his prowess throughout the NFL Draft. Under his
guidance, the team picked up noteworthy young quarterback, Mark Sanchez,
who proved with the USC Trojans that he can make the throws, and running
back Shonn Greene, a powerful athlete who may have his critics, but
convincingly helped the Hawkeyes turn their season around. Ryan seems to
have succeeded in plugging the holes in the Jets, except for the wide
receiver. With Laveranues Coles gone, the Jets need someone who will be
a formidable threat deep down the field.
2009 Preview
If Mark Sanchez' off-season workouts are anything to go by, the
youngster may actually start this season. Initially, the general
consensus was that he needed to work his way onto the field later this
year or even next season, but he has impressed so much that 2009 could
mark his debut with the Jets. It is looking increasingly likely that
Ryan will build up a new, stronger offense centered around Sanchez.
However, New York still needs a couple of wide outs to compliment the
running attack and Thomas Jones in particular. As for the Jets' defense,
Ryan has a lot of experience as a defensive coordinator.
2009 Prediction
While the name of the Jets' rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez is being
bandied around, the reality is that the youngster is unlikely to have a
'breakout' season, which puts a question mark over the team's offense,
and thus the season ahead. Both Sanchez and the rest of the offense will
undoubtedly take some time to become a consistent and cohesive unit.
Given these factors, the New York Jets may be one of the harder teams to
predict this season. Our Pick This is a year for the Jets to rebuild. They might surprise as their rookie QB should be the real deal and may pick things up very quickly, but they play in a competitive division and one should exercise caution before betting on New York.
