December 25 - It is a truism that the payout for every NFL bet against the spread is the same regardless of whether the teams are playing for something or if it is a meaningless contest between eliminated clubs. But there is a little more excitement for sports bettors when the game is hard-fought, and the result has an impact on the league. There are plenty of these elimination games on tap this Sunday.
In fact, we can't think of a Week 17 that shapes up to be as exciting for NFL football gambling as the one looming large on Sunday. Many teams remain in contention for prized playoff berths, and there are myriad permutations as to who will advance and who will be left on the sidelines.
In the AFC the biggest game on Sunday afternoon is arguably the Miami Dolphins at the New York Jets. The Dolphins are the road team and are 3 point underdogs, but they control their own destiny as the Jets have fallen to pieces in recent weeks. A sickening loss at Seattle on Sunday underscored how poorly New York has played down the stretch, and now Miami has a chance to go from 1-15 last year to division champions this year. Call it the Bill Parcells golden touch.
The Patriots are also still in the AFC East mix and their 1 pm early kickoff against the Bills will be watched closely by Jets and Dolphins fans. New England are 6.5 point road favorites, but some shrewd wiseguy money is coming for the Bills home cover. This one could end up being very close.
The Sunday night game will see the Denver Broncos travel to the San Diego Chargers in a contest that will determine the AFC West champion. The Chargers are playing very well and are mounting a late, well you know what, to win the crown. The Broncos must win or tie (yes Donovan, teams can indeed tie in the NFL) to get into the playoffs.
In the NFC the game to watch is between the Cowboys and the Eagles. Both teams could still miss out on the postseason, regardless of what happens in their game, as they need some help from teams like Tampa Bay, Chicago, and Minnesota.
All of those teams are in action at 1 pm, with Tampa Bay given the easy task of beating the Raiders at home. The Bucs are nearly 2 TD favorites according to the latest spread (-13.5 points). The Vikings must beat the Giants, while the Bears have the tough task of playing the Texans in Houston.
Anything can happen this Sunday, and it should be incredibly entertaining to watch. Make it that much more exciting by betting on all the games as well - you know we'll do the same!
