NFL Football Gambling Introduction

NFL Football GamblingIt's that time of year again, the most exciting part of the year for serious and casual online sports gambling alike, the start of the new NFL season. The sheer number and size of bets placed on the NFL dwarfs all other sports betting by a distance, and we intend to arm you with a few basic tips and observations that should make winning at NFL Football gambling that little bit easier.

Professional gamblers realize that their best betting opportunities are available on NFL and College Football lines (although the latter is to a lesser extent) precisely because so many casual and uninformed bets are wagered on these sports events. People who have no understanding of sports betting love to place bets on Monday Night Football or College Bowl Games or the Super Bowl, but because they don't know a lot about odds, lines, and spreads they tilt the advantage in favor of informed sports bettors, known throughout the industry as "Wiseguys".

Most casual fans like to bet the favorite to cover the spread, and they also like to bet the Over for total points. These are the two primary bets that one can make on any NFL game. In the first type of bet the two teams are allocated a handicap by the odds makers and you have to select which of the two teams will beat that handicap. For instance a typical "line" might read that New England are -3.5 points at Baltimore. What this means is that New England must defeat Baltimore by a margin of at least 4 points in order for a bet on New England to win. It also means that if Baltimore loses by less than 4 points, or wins by any amount, then a bet on Baltimore would win. This artificial game within a game creates unrivalled excitement for even the most casual gambler.

In the second type of bet the points scored by New England and Baltimore are combined and those total points must either exceed (go Over) or stay beneath (go Under) the total points line that was set by the odds makers. For a game like our example the total points market might be 37. So, if the final result is New England 21 - Baltimore 18 the game would go Over for total points. In this case, New England would also fail to cover the spread, even though they won, and those shrewd handicappers who "took the points" on the home underdog, ie: bet Baltimore +3.5 points, would win their bet by the narrowest of margins.

Our advice to you is to ignore a lot of the media hype that surrounds teams and do your own objective homework before placing a bet. If a celebrity player on a team goes down injured a lot of money invariably pours onto the opposing team. Don't follow the rest of the herd. There is frequently plenty of betting value by going against the grain.

We recommend opening at least 3 accounts with offshore online sport books if you plan to bet on the NFL. The reason for this is very simple, but also crucially important. Sports books post different lines on the same game. So imagine our earlier example, but now you find that some sports book have Baltimore +3 but others have them +3.5 points. This is very common, and if you only had one account you would never know that the extra 0.5 point was available elsewhere. In this instance your bet would be a push with no profit to you, but if you had multiple accounts and shopped around you could have cashed in a big winner! Don't be caught out with only the one option. Use multiple sports books and always check each one thoroughly to see where they are offering "soft" discounted lines.

Now that you have the tools to succeed all that remains is to wish you good luck with this upcoming NFL season. It is unquestionably the greatest sport to bet on, and now it can also become your most profitable sport to bet on!
