August 26 - OK, so by now most 'smart' NFL betting fans have an idea of where their betting dollars will be spent this season, subject, of course, to change, injuries, arrests and upsets. Perhaps the more interesting question is where most 'foolish' NFL betting fans are choosing to spread their hard-earned dough around?
NFL long shots is our biggest guess. Sure, American football is all about the favorites and the underdogs. But within that, every season there are a always couple of teams you just know are going to crash and burn, and true to form, most do. But every now and then a few teams come along that against all odds win a few games they shouldn't have.
And for those NFL betting fans 'foolish' (or should that read 'smart') enough to back them, they end up with a nice wad of cash in their pockets. Of course, as any seasoned gambler will tell you, if choosing 'bankable' long shots was easy, there'd be longer waiting lists for exotic sports cars around the world, and even fewer super models to fill them with.
Think back a few seasons. The 2007 winners were the New York Giants and the 2009 winners were the New Orleans Saints. 'So', I hear you say. So, in the season before these teams earned their respective Super Bowl rings, each finished on 8-8, which is hardly the kind of score that conjures up a team you'd be willing to bet your nest egg on a season later.
But I'm sure in hindsight you bet you did. Anyway, by now you may be intrigued to find out who in our considered opinion are the season's top 3 NFL long shots to back.
At number one are the Houston Texans at 33/1. You may recall how the Texans only missed the playoffs last season on account of nine missed field goals and a handful of fumbles. Tight end Owen Daniels, receivers Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones and quarterback Matt Schaub seem well-equipped to keep the team moving forward this season.
Number two on our NBA long shot list are the San Francisco 49ers at 28/1. This could be the year that the 49ers finally come together to form a tight and cohesive team. Linebacker Patrick Willis is expected to light up the field, as is tight end Vernon Davis, and even quarterback Alex Smith who, after a long road, looks finally to be in the zone.
And number three are the Atlanta Falcons at 24/1. It may have come too late in the season to do them much good, but the Falcons pulled out three straight wins to see out the season 9-7. In the off-season, manager Thomas Dimitroff beefed up the team's defense big time, while quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner are fighting fit.
Either of these three NFL long shots are worth a wager or two this season.
