Baccarat
Overview
In the game of Baccarat, the player must aim to get a hand, in value, closer to 9
than that of the
banker's. The game is played modulo 10 - that is if the total of the hand is
larger than 10, then 10 will be deducted from the total so that the value of the
hand remains between 0 and 9.
ie: A player's cards total 15. 10 is deducted, so the value of
the hand equals 5. The cards count as an ace as 1, two counts as 2, etc up
to nine
counts as 9, however tens, jacks, queens and kings count as 0.
Playing the game
The player and banker are dealt 2 cards face down when starting the game of
Baccarat. The next move will depend on the cards in the hands.
Should the player or banker have a card total of 8 or 9, he will turn the cards over
immediately and the other players must also do so. (The cards in an internet
Baccarat game are always
face up). A 9 value will wins over any lesser total. Should neither player
have a 9, then 8 will win over any lesser total. Should there be a tied 9 or tied
8, a stand off occurs and no money will change hands. (Unless ties can be bet by
the other players).
Should neither player nor banker have a natural - that is a total of 8 or
9, then play will go to the player. The player will then stand - or not draw, on a total of 6 or
7. If however the
player has a total of 5 or less, he must draw 1 card (face up).
It is then the bankers' turn. He will stand with a total of 7. With a total of 6 or
less, his selection will depend on the value of his 2 card total and the value of
the card that the player drew.

Baccarat betting
The game of Baccarat has quite reasonable odds for players. The house generally
has a small edge of player bets, and to balance this will usually take a
commission of about 5%
on winning bank bets. Bets must be made before any cards are dealt. The banker
in Baccarat plays against only 1 player at a time, though all or any of
the other players can
bet on the hand.
The game can accomodate up to 12 or 14 players around the Baccarat kidney-shaped table,
depending
on its size. 3 dealers / croupiers handle or run run the game; 1 handles the
cards and the other 2 handle the bets and the commission that is paid on
winning bank bets. The players positioning on the table is not important, but
what is , is that the bets must be made in a marked area on the table that corresponds to the players seat.
The players
can bet in 3 different ways: on the bank, on the player's hand, or for a tie.
Usually, one will see players switch from betting on the bank to betting on
the player's hand and vice versa. Betting for a tie while having a larger payoff
is not common or wise! It is also considered one of the worst bets in the casino.
The bet is made by placing money on the table in a players marked area on the wagered
spot. ie: should one be player no 2 and wish to bet on the bank, one would place the desired wager amount on the table layout place for player number
2
marked 'bank'.
The winning player and bank bets pay out even money excluding commissions. Hands
resulting in a tie, pay off tie wagers at 8 : 1 and a bank or player bet is treated
as a push, with the money remaining on the table for the next hand.
