April 23 - The Unlawful Internet Gambling Act, introduced by Rep. Jim Leach, may pass in the house of congress as early as June. It is a clear violation of every American's civil liberties, and a hypocritical effort to favor and protect certain forms of gambling (both online and offline) at the expense of other forms that do not line politicians' pockets.
The bill is also being backed by Senator John Kyl and it could pass in the Senate as well. Similar bills have passed both the house and the senate twice in the past seven years. They have never been passed into law by the president, however. If this bill does become law it would be a step back for a country wrapped up in its own puritantical hypocrisy. America is at the forefront of online gambling, be it online poker, online casinos, or online sports betting (the primary focus of which is US sports). Americans love to gamble and want to gamble, but their government feels that they are incapable of making this decision.
Instead the US government would like to tell its citizens exactly which websites they may visit and which they may not by banning ISPs from showing online gambling websites. The money might belong to the citizen but the government would like to tell the citizen exactly how and where he is entitled to spend it.
And why are scurrilous politicans like Kyl, Leach, and Goodlatte so concerned with the moral wellbeing of Americans? Is it because they lie awake at night fretting that underage youngsters are gambling online, or do they fear that terrorists use online slots to launder their money? Do us a favor - only a very gullible minority could seriously believe those claims. The reason they want to prohibit online gambling is to provide protection to those forms of gambling that are legal in the USA; the same forms of gambling that lobby and pay for those politicans to do their crusading good work.
So online gambling on horseracing is fine but online poker is pernicious and evil. Gambling on poker in Las Vegas, however, is fine. The lottery is great bt online keno and online bingo is a huge problem. You see the logic I'm sure.
It is time for all Americans to voice their displeasure at being treated like imbeciles by an Orwellian group of corrupt politicians. You have the constitutional right to visit whatever website you want, and to spend your own money how you see fit. You also have the right to buy goods and services from foreign companies when those companies operate legally in other legislated jurisdictions.
The American government has shown scant regard for other jurisdictions historically, and the same scorn has been heaped upon its own citizens in the past. Do not let it happen again with online gambling.
