April 14 - Two of the world's biggest online poker rooms,
Ultimate Bet and
Absolute Poker,
have announced some changes to their marketing strategies with respect to
celebrity endorsement. A number of poker pros won't be used to endorse
sites any more...
Pros like Michael Mizrachi, Mark Seif and
Antonio Esfandiari, won't be associated with the poke rooms any more.
The two companies merged in
November 2006, but still run off different networks and continue to allow U.S.
players to play poker for real money.
"We decided to reevaluate endorsement by poker pros," an unknown company official
said. "We made the decision to ensure that U.S. customers still get the very best in
online poker."
The source said that there were concerns over professional poker players becoming targets for the
Department of Justice and that they could be seen as "aiding and abetting" Internet gambling.
Many other pro's will stay with UB like Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke, who have been part of UB since the site opened,
will remain with UB to promote the brand internationally.
