July 26 - It's one of the biggest stories at the 2006 WSOP to date: Phil Hellmuth Jr. has won his record-equalling tenth World Series Of Poker event, and with the bracelet for the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em Event he ties Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan for most wins.
Full credit to Phil Hellmuth who has played at an exceptionally high level throughout the 2006 WSOP and had already come close to winning two previous events. In fact, he came second in an earlier event this month.
The $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em event had a rebuy phase where most of the pros fired at will. Daniel Negreanu made 48 rebuys in total (that's not a misprint folks) and spent $49,000 trying to win this one.
But once the dust had settled and the crazy period of play was over the final table was one of quality:
1. Phil Hellmuth Jr. led with $768,000 chips and never looked back
2. Daryn Firicano - $450,000
3. Juha Helppi - $436,000
4. Ralph Perry - $235,000
5. Terris Preston - $164,000
6. John Spadavecchia - $122,00
7. David Plastik - $121,000
8. Elio Cabrera - $95,000
9. Antanas "Tony G" Guoga - $77,000
Helppi eventually finished second, losing the heads-up battle to Hellmuth, who afterwards looked elated but also exhausted after capturing his 10th bracelet. Every single one of his WSOP wins have come at no-limit hold'em, and while he is no mixed-game H.O.R.S.E. threat Phil Hellmuth Jr. must rank as one of the greatest no-limit hold'em tournament players of all time.
