Last Season
The Philadelphia Eagles started off the 2008 NFL season with more of a
whimper than a bang, losing 3 out of their first 5 games. From the get
go it was plain to see that the teams' offense was struggling. Even star
quarterback Donovan McNabb was benched for the first time ever for
failing to get the ball out. But towards the end of the season McNabb
returned stronger than ever, and breathed life into the Eagles. So much
so that the team won 4 out of their last 5 games, including a 44-6
thrashing of the Dallas Cowboys. The team's improved form secured them a
well-deserved spot in the playoffs.
Off Season
Coming into the off-season, the Philadelphia Eagles had reason to
smile after recovering from a poor start in 2008 to finish in the NFL
top 10 in overall defense, and with a successful offense. To bolster the
team, the Eagles signed fullback, FB Leonard Weaver, for one year. He is
expected to create paths for running back, Brian Westbrook. The 2009 NFL
Draft yielded some excellent new talent including Missouri wide
receiver, Jeremy Maclin; Pittsburgh running back, LeSean McCoy; Florida
tight end, TE Cornelius Ingram; and Virginia Tech cornerback, Victor
Harris. Although the Eagles lost safety, Brian
Dawkins, to the Denver Broncos after his contract expired, he was
replaced by talented ex-Browns safety, Sean Jones.
2009 Preview
With its rock-solid defense, the Philadelphia Eagles will be a tough
team to beat this season, especially with the welcome addition of Sean
Jones. And offensively, the Eagles should be no slouch either, assuming
of course that Donovan McNabb starts off the season focused and stays
that way. The same can be said for Brian Westbrook, undoubtedly one of
the NFL's most talented receiver/runners. And if the Eagles can figure
out how to use newbie Jeremy Maclin on special teams, he could also
prove to be a great asset. If Philadelphia were just 4 points shy of
winning the NFC Championship last year, imagine what they can do this
year.
2009 Prediction
The Philadelphia Eagles should kick off the season with two very
illuminating games. The first, against the Carolina Panthers - one of
the NFL's strongest teams defensively - will test the Eagles' defense,
while the second, against the New Orleans Saints - one of the NFL's
strongest teams offensively - will test the team's offense. Down then
line the Eagles will have to deal with tough rivals in the form of the
Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, but they should dominate.
**Our Pick Look for the Eagles to make a deep run in the playoffs, proving once again that Karma doesn't apply in the US of A. Hire Vick and watch their stock soar!
