Last Season
Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers were treated to one of the best
seasons in recent memory, as the team dominated the NFL defensively last
season, holding their rivals to an average of only 237 yards and 13.9
points per game. In fact, defensively the Steelers only gave up more
than 20 points on two occasions during the season. Offensively the team
only averaged 311
yards per game, but then they chose to run the ball more. At Super Bowl
XLIII, the Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 to win the
Championship. Overall 2008 was a standout year for many Steelers,
especially quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger and wide receivers Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. Off Season
Still focused from their glorious victory, the
Pittsburgh Stealers approached the off-season with vigor. They took
advantage of the 2009 NFL Draft and secured some talented players to add
even more depth to their dazzling defense. The powerful Evander 'Ziggy' Hood
for instance, should be an asset. In an attempt to bolster its offense,
the Steelers signed Kraig Urbik, a talented guard who may even start
this season, while receiver Mike Wallace is expected to add some depth.
The team re-signed two of its three line starters, Max Starks and Willie
Colon, while Marvel Smith opted to join the San Francisco 49ers.
2009 Preview
There is no doubt that if the Pittsburgh Steelers play like they
played last season, they'll be one of the premier NFL teams to watch.
Having said that, the Steelers will still have their work cut out as
many AFC teams are looking strong and re-focused this season. And
despite ending up with one of the 'easier' AFC schedules, they'll face
some stiff competition against the Baltimore Ravens. Pittsburgh's
defense should continue to be top draw while offensively, if
Roethlisberger can stay on track and keep the interceptions down, the
team should hold its own. Fans will be curious to see if they can
replicate 2008.
2009 Prediction
Even though other teams will be wary of the 2008 NFL Champions, the
Pittsburgh Stealers will have to stay on their toes from the get go. It
is important that they assert themselves early on and identify any work
that needs to be done on their offense as well as defense. If they can
take out the evenly-matched Baltimore Ravens, they have a good shot at
going all the way again. Our Pick The Steelers will not flop in the role of defending champions, and while the Ravens might be the new team to beat in this division we still expect the champs to win 10 games and find a way into the playoffs. Do not discount this team.
