Although Playtech have not yet issued a formal statement, we have been
contacted by more than one Playtech operator, informing us that as of this Friday,
the casinos they represent will block US residents from playing.
Many people are questioning the decision to block players from the US, but
they forget that these are public companies that have a shareholder
responsibility.
Because of their public profile, they can no longer take a view
that being offshore protects them from US law. They have to think about all
eventualities, including the fact that gambling online may in future be
regulated in the US (however unlikely that may sound right now). They would
rather not risk breaking the law now.
I also don't believe people need to panic to withdraw their money from
Playtech casinos. Having now also spoken to another Playtech operator, they
claim its business as usual.
I firmly believe that the Playtech casinos we promote here at Online Gambling
Insider will pay
you as they have a global reputation to uphold (they will after all continue
to do business in the rest of the world).
We will post information on which Playtech casinos are affected as soon as it
becomes clear.
There are still many options open to gamblers in the US, such as
Microgaming
casinos and poker rooms.
