Poker Legend Chip Reese Has Died - 12-06-07

December 6 - One of the true legends of professional poker, Chip Reese, has passed away in his sleep after displaying symptoms of pneumonia. He was 56 years old. David "Chip" Reese was widely regarded by other poker pros as the best cash game player in the world. He was a fixture of the "Big Game" in Bobby's Room at the Bellagio, and over the years he was a consistent big winner.

Chip Reese's best known achievement was his incredible victory in the first World Series Of Poker HORSE event, with a buy-in of $50,000 this tournament was designed to find the best all-round poker player in the world. One needed immense skill in a variety of poker games including Razz, Omaha, and Hold 'em. Many considered this the true world poker championship, especially after Jamie Gold won the so-called Main Event that same year.

The final table of the 2006 HORSE event at the WSOP featured Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, and of course Reese. Players of the quality of Patrik Antonius and Daniel Negreanu also went deep in the tourney. It was the one all the big boys wanted to win. the final table of 9 players had combined to win 37 WSOP bracelets between them, a record that might never be broken.

Another top poker player and analyst of the game, Andy Bloch, ultimately made it to the heads-up battle with Reese. The final confontation was truly epic, lasting 7 hours alone! Eventually, Chip Reese prevailed winning his third WSOP title.

The reason he didn't win more WSOP bracelets is that he didn't play in a lot of them, and when he did his focus wasn't there as it was for cash games. Educated at Dartmouth College, David "Chip" Reese was supposed to be headed to Stanford for another degree when he stopped over in Las Vegas to play a little poker - he liked what he saw and stayed on for the rest of his life. He schooled everyone at cash games from rich businessmen all the way up to Stu Ungar himself.

Perhaps you could be the next great cash game poker player at Full Tilt Poker!
