August 4 - Ever wondered what it would feel like to be an Insider in the high-stakes world of tournament poker at the 2006 WSOP? Televised poker will be taken to the next level with a reality series entitled "House Of Cards", which follows the fortunes of six poker pros at this year's World Series Of Poker.
Six top poker professionals stayed together in a luxury Las Vegas mansion for the duration of the WSOP and the cameras were there to track their highs and lows. Two of Europe's best poker players were in the house, Dave Colclough known to many as El Blondie and Marc Goodwin who's nickname on the tour is Mr. Cool.
We were fortunate enough to catch up with Goodwin at the Rio a few days ago and learn a little more about a player currently ranked second in the European Rankings for poker in 2006.
Marc Goodwin may well be the most successful poker player that you haven't heard of, and that's due to the fact that he only started playing in tournaments a year ago. But before that he was a feared high-stakes cash game player who had few equals in Europe.
Goodwin hails from Birmingham, although his sartorial elegance seems more Continental than Midlands in our opinion! He's the English answer to Marcel Luske in terms of style and panache, although no word yet on whether he can match the Dutchman in a singing contest.
Marc Goodwin is a graduate of one of the legendary poker cash games in the world, a weekly pot-limit game that included regulars like Colclough and Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott.
Our advice to you is that if you're ever sitting at a table with ten thousand quid in front of you and you're the only one lacking a nickname out of a Tarantino film then you my friend are the fish.
Goodwin not only stayed in the game, he thrived there, and ended up with his own flash nickname - Mr. Cool, courtesy of some ribbing by good friend El Blondie, who chastised him for caring more about the TV cameras and his appearance than his chip stack while they were playing in a recent tournament.
The other pros in the house included WSOP bracelet winner Brian Wilson, who at the time of writing was still a live threat in this year's Main Event, and Tony Chessa, another well-known poker pro from across the pond.
Goodwin came achingly close to winning his first WSOP event this year when he put himself in prime position to win the $5000 Pot-Limit Omaha event, only to be crippled by a bad beat when he went up against another big stack late in the event.
The winner of that bad beat? Lee Watkinson, who of course went on after that bit of good fortune to win the event!
Marc Goodwin endorses USAPoker.com, which is part of the iPoker network powered by Playtech software. We're big fans of this poker network because of the soft opposition, although if you're up against someone with the username Mr. Cool we reserve the right to take back that last comment!
House Of Cards will wrap up filming soon and this Insider has it on good authority that there has been plenty of interest from a few different parties to buy the rights to screen the show. It should make for very interesting viewing, and ensure that Marc Goodwin becomes more of a household name.
