Powerful New Support For US Online Gambling Regulation - 12-16-07

December 17 - Support for Rep, Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) is gaining momentum with four further Senators pledging their support in the last couple of weeks. Congressmen from California, New Jersey, Washington, and Connecticut have pledged their backing, bringing the total number that support new  legislation to 45.

Frank has put forward the act that will supersede the controversial UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) and is designed to legalize and regulate online gambling.

Frank's act has seen a constant stream of new backers and the latest supporters are Robert Andrews from New Jersey, Adam Smith from Washington and John Larson from Connecticut.

This week also saw new support from California in the form of Congresswoman Ellen Taucher, who is currently serving her sixth term as a representative from California's Tenth district. She chairs the House New Democrat Coalition, the largest centrist caucus in the House of Representatives. Her job is essentially to implement policies that will ensure that the US remains competitive and  meets the challenges of globalization. 

The increased support proves the importance of  IGREA to ensure freedoms and to address issues related the the World Trade Organization. Smith is the Chairman of the Terrorism, Unconventional Threats And Capabilities Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee and also serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Larson is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee with jurisdiction over the nations tax code and trade policies.

These are powerful new backers for Frank's proposed bill.
