May 10 - 2007 Preakness betting is underway early thanks to Futures markets now available at specifically concerned with Street Sense and the colt's odds of capturing the prize everyone in horse racing wants so badly, The Triple Crown.
Street Sense won the 2007 Kentucky Derby in exceptional style and convinced many that he could be the first Triple Crown winner is nearly 30 years. But in order to emulate the feat last managed by Affirmed he needs a lot of luck to go his way.
First off he'll have to survive the tricky Pimlico course and avoid the tragic fate suffered by last year's heir apparent horse racing's most coveted crown, Barbaro. Then he'll need to win the Preakness. The odds are +135 that Street Sense will do this according to the Futures betting.
That's pretty decent value - he should be at shorter odds come race time, and winning the Preakness is well within his compass, although Pimlico is a speed favoring track and Hard Spun, with local jockey Pino on board, could be tougher to catch this time. The real problem according to history will be winning at Belmont.
The odds that Street Sense can win the remaining two legs is +350, and that seems about right based on the multiple failures of very good horses in the past decade. To win all three races requires a blend of stamina, goof fortune, and sheer talent that has proved elusive for majestic race horses such as Real Quiet, Silver Charm, War Emblem, Smarty Jones, and Funny Cide to name but a few.
They all won the Preakness Stakes, however, and on May 19 we expect that Street Sense will do the same.
