Relaxed Advertising Laws For Australian Bookmakers - 10-22-08

October 22 - Austrian Northern Territory licensed bookmakers may soon be able to take advantage of relaxed advertising in the states of New South Wales and Victoria.

At the moment, online bookies licensed in other states cannot advertise in the nation's two largest states. This is likely to change as it is reported that Rob Hulls, Deputy Premier and Racing Minister for Victoria, and Kevin Greene, Minister of Gaming and Racing for New South Wales, are currently drafting new advertising reforms that will include strict guidelines including "appropriate consumer protections" (as is the case in the UK where any form of advertising needs to comply with strict rules)..

If the laws are passed, interstates bookies will have the luxury of advertising to these two lucrative markets, but the restrictions on international bookmakers will remain.

"The proposed changes will create an opportunity for bookmakers in both Victoria and New South Wales to grow their businesses through advertising generally and will also provide new revenue streams for racing clubs in both states through advertising and race sponsorship," said Hulls.

"While opening the way for advertising by bookmakers licensed in other jurisdictions, Victoria remains committed to a responsible gambling environment. We will also be proposing guidelines in relation to advertising standards for wagering service providers to ensure that appropriate consumer protection measures are included."

Bookmakers revealed that the changes would see extra money put back into racing based in the two states although no date has yet been set for the legislation to come before either parliament.

Many bookmakers have been very verbal for a number of years now and will be hoping the law is passed.

These include Northern Territory licensed bookmakers like Centrebet.com and IASBet.com.
