Rio Ferdinand to miss start of English Premier League - 07-26-10

July 26 - There wasn't an England national football team fan in the world who didn't wince when they heard that England captain and Man United playmaker Rio Ferdinand would miss the 2010 World Cup in South Africa due to injury.

And while fans of the Red Devils, and even the team itself, expected Ferdinand to at least return to the pitch for Man U's first game of the English Premier League against Newcastle United on August 16, he'll still be parked on the bench.

News of Ferdinand's absence was revealed in a bulletin on the weekend delivered by Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. In it, Fergie announced that Ferdinand's injury would keep him off the pitch for longer than expected.

Six weeks, in fact, according to the player himself, who a few days ago Tweeted: 'Six weeks and I'll be playing again. At the start of rehab we put dates on these injury comebacks, but sometimes the goalposts move a bit, as in this case.'

The 31-year-old center back picked up the injury almost two months ago. He had been at the England training camp in Rustenburg, South Africa for barely a day, when he suffered a knee ligament injury during the side's first training session.

After a few days, a melancholy Ferdinand returned to England. In hindsight this was a smart move, because it distanced him from what in the next few weeks would reveal itself to be one of England's worst World Cup squads in history.

And although his 2010 World Cup hopes were dashed, like a true professional Ferdinand had been focused on recovering from his knee injury in time for the start of the 2010-11 English Premier League season with Manchester United.
