June 19 - Royal Ascot 2007 will start with a bang today as two of the UK's most popular horses are set to run in the two Group 1 races on the first day's card. George Washington returns to horse racing in the Queen Anne Stakes, and dual Guineas winner Cockney Rebel looks for a third Group One triumph in the St. James's Palace Stakes.
There are six races on today's Royal Ascot 2007 card including two Group Two races. One of these is the King's Stand Stakes, a sprint that is always exciting to watch as it attracts a big field and usually resembles the old cavalry charge to the wire.
The favourite for this race is the Australian mare Miss Andretti, who comes to England with a huge reputation and phenomenal form on her home tracks where she is a multiple stakes winner and a speed machine. She has a poor draw at Ascot, however, and is easy to back at 7-2. Bentley Biscuit and Takeover Target, two more Aussie horses are next in the betting, so the race should be dominated by Antipodean quadripeds.
The St James is shaping up as the definitive mile race of the year for the three-year-old crop as it pits the winner of the English and Irish Guineas (Cockney Rebel) against the French Guineas winner (Astronomer Royal) and the other runners with chances were all involved in at least one of those races. We think the form from the French Guineas will hold up and like O'Brien's less fancied runner Astronomer Royal to win here at 8-1.
Cockney Rebel is a great horse though and will be a worthy favourite, and we expect plenty of betting support for Dutch Art (second in the 2000 Guineas) and Excellent Art (another O'Brien runner along with Duke Of Marmalade who ran fourth in the 2000 Guineas).
The Queen Anne will all be about George Washington, imperial on the racecourse but a little soft at stud. So he's back in training and it remains to be seen whether he still wants to race. This is one of the moodiest horses ever to set foot on the track - and if he doesn't feel like winning he won't. A bet on him at Evens (he is the current favourite) cannot be advised until we can see what the long layoff has done to him. Still, he will be fun to watch. If you want to bet on the race we do recommend a punt on the gutsy Red Evie.
