Last Season
The start of the San Diego Chargers 2008 NFL season was anything but
spectacular, but the team came back towards the end to turn its 4-8
record into 8-8, enough to make it into the playoffs. However, the
Chargers were beset with issues from the outset. Its offense, for
instance, disappeared halfway through the season, which was not helped
by talented running back, LaDainian Tomlinson, who struggled after
recovering from a torn ligament. That said, quarterback Phillip Rivers
had the best season of his career, racking up 4000 yards, 34 touchdowns
- adding a 65% completion percentage to his record.
Off Season
Although the San Diego Chargers lost a couple of great players in the
off-season in the form of defensive end, Igor Olshansky, and guard, Mike
Goff, the team focused on signing some new talent in the 2009 NFL Draft
to help the team's beleaguered running game. And in that vein they
secured talented offensive guard, Louis Vasquez, as well as Tiger Tyronne
Greene, who has a lot of potential. Defensively, the Chargers signed
defensive end, Larry English, a renowned tough guy and hard worker. The
team also signed former Dallas Cowboys linebacker, Kevin Burnett, who
didn't shine in Texas, but could do great things for San Diego.
2009 Preview
Fans of the San Diego Chargers will no doubt be very eager to see if
Phillip Rivers can continue his fine 2008 form into this season. If he
can, and the team's running game makes a welcome return bolstered by the
new young talent, the Chargers should be a team worth following this
season. With LaDainian Tomlinson's injury woes finally behind him, he
should return to his 'superstar' 1,500 yard form this season. Also back
after recovering from a serious knee injury is star linebacker, Shawne
Merriman. Hopefully his knee won't give out this season. San Diego will be favored in the
AFC West, but must play at the top of their game to progress.
2009 Prediction
It may be a big blessing for the San Diego Chargers that the AFC West
should be weaker than last season. That said. the team will still have
to overcome some stiff competition in the form of the Philadelphia
Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants. Plus don't forget that in
the opening month they'll also have to face the Baltimore Ravens and
Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chargers will be one of the more interesting
teams to follow this NFL season.
**Our Pick The schedule against non-division foes is tough, but fortunately this team plays in a JV division and should still make it to the playoffs even if they only win 8 games. They could go far if old stars regain their best form.
