Last Season
The San Francisco 49ers kicked off last season with a whimper to say
the least. Despite being in the NFC West division, arguably the weakest
in the NFL, the team only managed to win 2 out of its first 7 games.
This was enough to send head coach, Mike Nolan, packing. His 'interim'
replacement, Mike Singletary, seemed to have the magic touch, and
conjured up a new and improved 49ers team. Under his guidance, the team
won 5 or their last 7 games. The 49ers' offense improved as the season
progressed as did its defense, ending the season on 7-9.
Off Season
Under new coach Mike Singletary, the San Francisco 49ers went into the
off-season eager to improve for the 2009 season. Defensively, they
quickly signed defensive end, Demetric Evans, who captured 33 tackles
last season with the Washington Redskins. The 2009 NFL Draft also
yielded some exciting players including ex-Pittsburgh inside linebacker,
Scott McKillop, who should develop over time. Offensively, the draft
yielded top playmaking wide receiver, Michael Crabtree, who should bring
a lot to the 49ers. The team also signed strong Alabama running back, Glen Coffee,
who could become an every down starter.
2009 Preview
This season, like last, the San Francisco 49ers will look to
quarterback, Shaun Hill, to lead the team's offense, although his main
focus will no doubt be to keep his interceptions to a minimum. Fans will
be eager to see how Michael Crabtree adapts to the 49ers, and whether
he'll start putting points on the board from the get go. Despite how
much the team has been flourishing under coach Singletary, the big
question is whether San Francisco's secondary defense can match its
solid rush defense. But assuming that its defense does come together,
and Hill has a stand-out season for the offense, the 49ers could
certainly dazzle again this season.
2009 Prediction
The
San Francisco 49ers will be tested very early on this season when they
take on the defending NFC Champions, the Arizona Cardinals, in week 1.
Whether they win or lose, there is little doubt that they'll rack up
more wins then losses in their division this season. That said, they'll
also have some grueling games against out of conference teams like the
Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts. The 49ers should be one of
the teams to watch this season.
**Our Pick San Francisco have an opportunity this season to win back the West but they can't do it with Hill as their QB, and Alex Smith probably isn't the answer either. They have drafted very well, and should improve from last season. This could be a sleeper team for punters, especially when they are favored at home.
