September 16 - Now that the new NFL season is underway, it's time to start
identifying the teams that will likely cruise through the season,
and those that will likely struggle every step of the way. And
looking at all the NFL games scheduled for the weekend - in Week 2
of the regular season - one that has peaked our interest is the
matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks.
Seahawks Steelers Line: Pittsburgh Steelers -14.5
The Seahawks Must Improve Their Special Teams
In their recent showdown with the San Francisco 49ers, the Seattle
Seahawks struggled offensively, while their defense showed far more
pluck and strength than most people expected. In that game - which
the 49ers won 33-17 - head coach Pete Carroll may have aimed too
high with two special teams moves late in the game, which backfired
and cost the team valuable points. It won't help Seattle's chances any that the team has already been
afflicted with a host of injuries that will impact many positions in
the team, especially as the new season is barely underway. That
aside, coach Carroll will be rallying this week to bolster the
Seahawks' offense and defense ahead of Sunday, and ensure the
special teams don't repeat the same mistakes from last week.
He'll also no doubt be eager to drive home the importance of making
a big play early on in Sunday's game to both bolster the team's
confidence as well as stop the Steelers from gaining too much
momentum. So it's key that Seattle takes the game to the Steelers
from the get go, and prevents any turnovers early on, or that could
spell disaster and extend their losing record to 0-2.
The Steelers Need To Shut Down The Seahawks
The Pittsburgh Steelers also come off a crushing loss, when they
went down 35-7 to the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. And a loss that
heavy can seriously knock a team's confidence, especially a team
that reached the Super Bowl the season before. Which is why come
Sunday, the Steelers need to live up to their favorite status and
shut down Seattle from the start and not let up.The Super Bowl XLV finalists need to chalk up their first win of the
season and there is no reason why it shouldn't be at the expense of
the Seahawks. Unfortunately, the season-ending injury of right
tackle Willie Colon could have an impact on Sunday, because it means
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is far more vulnerable, which the
Ravens proved all too often last weekend.
So as long as the Steelers' offense can keep Seattle away from
Roethlisberger, the team should have a good shot of chalking up a
win and regaining their winning form. A victory would also go some
way in helping the Steelers forget that in their previous game they
gave up the second most points in the AFC Conference in Week 1, a
statistic that no team wants hanging over them.
Our Prediction: Seahawks vs Steelers
Both these teams got off to a rocky start this season, losing by big
margins. And while each will be eager to chalk up their first win of
the season, we predict the Steelers will be the team to beat on
Sunday, as long as their QB Ben Roethlisberger stays protected.
