Last Season
Even though they came up short in the Super Bowl that year, the 2005
NFL season was a stand out one for the Seattle Seahawks after they won
the NFC Championship with an incredible 13-3 record. However, ever since
then the Seahawks have slipped even further down the NFL totem pole and
last season hit rock bottom, posting a shocking 4-12 record. In fact, it
was the first time since 2002 that the team has had a losing season.
Last year the Seahawks boasted the worst passing defense in the NFL and
an offense in the bottom 5. Also, quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck, missed
most of the season due to a knee injury.
Off Season
During the off-season, the Seattle Seahawks bid farewell to running
back, Maurice Morris, and fullback, Leonard Weaver, and welcomed solid
outside linebackers, LeRoy Hill and D.D Lewis, to the team. In the 2009
NFL Draft, Seattle signed Wake Forest linebacker, Aaron Curry, arguably
the best defensive player in the Draft and a big-time playmaker. Next
was Oregon center, Max Unger, who is on the smaller side, but is very
fast. Penn State wide receiver, Deon Butler, has good hands and is also
fast. The Seahawks also signed wide receiver, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who
averaged over 1,000 yards per season with the Cincinnati Bengals.
2009 Preview
While most areas of the Seattle Seahawks' game was lacking last
season, arguably its lack-luster defense needed the most work. Expected
to continue to be weak in the secondary, the team may however surprise
with a solid run defense. Much of Seattle's defensive hopes rest with LeRoy Hill, Lofa
Tatupu and Aaron Curry. Curry especially will be closely watched this
season. And while the Seahawks defense was not very well supported by
its offense last season, the welcome return of healed up Hasselbeck
should be a step in the right direction. He should be helped by some of
the team's better linebackers, as well as running back, Julius Jones.
2009 Prediction
Despite its disastrous season last year, the
Seattle Seahawks have a chance to redeem themselves early on this
season as they take on the Saint Louis Rams and the San Francisco 49ers
in week 1 and 2. They should easily beat these teams and build up some
much-needed confidence going forward. Hopefully Seattle's offense and
defense will be dramatically improved from last season.
**Our Pick Seattle will undoubtedly improve on their 08 record, but it seems unlikely that they will win the division unless the Cardinals help by imploding, which is a possibility. The Seahawks look to have holes on both sides of the ball and this is not the same club that dominated the division for most of the decade.
